I am purchasing a high-value item that I would like to ensure during shipment to AURA (or to another site). What are the regulations covering insurance?
AURA centers, according to its contract with the National Science Foundation, cannot obtain insurance without U.S. government approval. Each center has specific guidelines for determining the insurance process. This can be a lengthy process (30 – 45 days) and is not guaranteed. Generally, insurance coverage is approved for high-value items (exceeding $300,000) or unique, one-of-a-kind items that are not replaceable.
Insurance on small value items will not be approved. According to the NSF, the centers are a self-insured program. Any loss is to be covered by the contract funds.
While insurance costs cannot be paid with government funds, insurance charges can be billed to consignees or other organizations if those parties request the insurance.
